Our Current Teachers
Michael Burnham has practiced mindful meditation for fifty years. As he closed a successful business career, he began training with the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness, and was credentialed to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 2015. Michael maintains an active daily mindfulness practice and regularly attends weeklong silent retreats.
His business resume includes being co-founder, CEO of My Next Phase a non-financial retirement planning company. Partner in PlumTree Ventures, a private equity group. CEO of Lewis Supply Company, which grew from a single office to having 22 branches and two international subsidiaries. Partner with Premium Products Sales Corporation, a strategic planning marketing consulting firm where he helped launch the likes of Perrier, Chipwich, NAPA Naturals, and an assortment of other domestic and international brands.
A C.P.A., Michael earned his Masters of Science in Accounting at the Northeastern University Graduate School of Professional Accounting, after earning a BA from Sarah Lawrence.
Chanda Murphy, PhD, received her doctorate in Experimental Psychology from the University of Memphis with a concentration in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Her applied work with a variety of teams and organizations ranges from helping to mitigate stress and burnout to improving internal communication, cooperation and culture. She has spent the past 15 years as a professor at the graduate and postgraduate levels and continues to conduct research on mindfulness interventions for both students and corporations. Chanda also works with local schools in the Memphis area, teaching effective social emotional learning and mindfulness skills to children.
She also earned her RYT 200-hour yoga certification and completed Cognitively-Based Compassion Training (CBCT) with Dr. Lobsang Tenzin Negi.
Mindful in Memphis was founded by Dr. Mark Musse and Dr. Manoj Jain approximately 30 years ago to create and grow a community of mindfulness in the area of Memphis, TN. Over the years, Mindful in Memphis has continued to be a resource for education and connection through courses, retreats, symposia and meditation.
